Treating nail fungus with salt is an effective way to fight the infection. If you add soda, iodine and other auxiliary components to recipes based on it, the result of therapy will increase several times. The tool has disinfecting and antioxidant properties, and in addition to fighting onychomycosis, it strengthens the nails and prevents the recurrence of the disease.

Salt from nail fungus

Operating principle

Salt for nail fungus has been used for a long time, since it has a pronounced therapeutic effect against infectious factors. With its help, an active alkaline environment is formed, which contributes to the death of pathogens and prevents their spread to healthy tissues.

The components of the salt easily penetrate into the deep layers of the nail and skin, destroying the spores of the fungus from the inside. The tool has additional antibacterial activity, preventing the attachment of a secondary infection. And also keratolytic action - softens and exfoliates the old stratum corneum.

All types of salt are endowed with the listed properties - both ordinary table salt (sodium chloride), and sea, and iodized. They contain trace elements of almost the whole periodic table - at least a hundred different useful components.

A strong salt solution will help a person not only during illness, but also in everyday life. Making baths based on sodium chloride at least once a week, nails acquire a healthy appearance, become stronger, and most importantly, infectious agents have no chance of survival. That is, salt is also an excellent prevention against nail fungus on the hands and feet.

Which salt to choose?

To combat onychomycosis, it is recommended to use the following types of products.

Salt name Description
MARINE Effectively softens and disinfects nails affected by fungus. Prepares them for treatment with local antimycotics.
COOKED Destroys the infection, thanks to the fungicidal effect, reduces the area of inflammation and swelling. Blocks the activity of pathogenic microflora. Able to cure onychomycosis at an early stage.
Iodized Softens the stratum corneum of the nail, destroys pathogenic bacteria, prevents the spread of infectious agents. Recommended as a therapeutic and prophylactic agent in the fight against mycosis of the feet.
ENGLISH It is known as "magnesia". Promotes cleansing and healing of nails and skin affected by fungus, improves exfoliation of the stratum corneum. Recommended exclusively for the prevention of onychomycosis.
FLAVORED Essential oils such as tea tree extract are usually added to the product. Such a remedy is endowed with strong antibacterial properties, fights against the symptoms of onychomycosis, and destroys an unpleasant odor. Recommended as an auxiliary method for the fight against nail fungus.

Traditional healers claim that ordinary gray salt is considered the most effective. Despite its unattractive appearance, its beneficial properties are much more pronounced than that of a finely ground snow-white product.

The dull shade of the salt is given by the algae remaining in it as a result of weak cleaning. Such a remedy has a powerful antioxidant effect and, as well as possible, is suitable for the treatment of onychomycosis.

To choose a really high-quality product, you need to pay attention to the points listed below:

  • Packing with preserved tightness without tears and dents.
  • The contents of the pack should be easily poured into it, be pliable. If the salt in the bag or box is in the form of a lump, it means that it was stored in high humidity conditions and it has partially lost its useful qualities.
  • The color of the product should be natural. A product that is snow-white or painted in bright shades is a common marketing ploy that has nothing to do with its healing capabilities.
  • Salt should be free of foreign odor.

Instructions for use for onychomycosis

The fight against nail fungus can be carried out using local baths, compresses and lotions. Let's talk about them in more detail.

Salt baths:

  • Most often, treatment is carried out simply using table or sea salt in the proportions: 1 tbsp. l. sodium chloride per 1 glass of water heated to 45 ° C. The feet are immersed in a prepared bath for 20 minutes. It is recommended to arrange the procedures every day for 1-2 weeks.
Salt baths
  • A few drops of iodine and 5 tbsp. Dissolve tablespoons of salt in 250 ml of water. Mix the components and add 2 tbsp. l. soda. Dip your feet into the prepared bath for 15 minutes. Iodine and salt are antiseptics that create a powerful bactericidal effect when used together, and a soda solution enhances their effect several times.
  • 100 ml of vegetable oil (preferably olive oil), 3 tbsp. l. salt and the same amount of apple cider vinegar are mixed and the feet or hands are lowered into the resulting product. The duration of the procedure is 10 minutes.
  • In 500 ml of water heated to 50 ° C, add 5 drops of iodine, 2 tbsp. l. soda, 3 tbsp. l. sea salt and 50 ml of orange or lemon juice. Dip your feet into the bath for 15 minutes.
Baths with sodium chloride and other means
  • Combine 3 tbsp in 1 liter of hot water. l. salt, 1 tsp l. lemon juice and essential oil of fir or mint (if necessary, they can be replaced with 10 drops of iodine).
  • In 1 liter of hot water add 3 tbsp. l. salts and a few crystals of potassium permanganate until a deep pink color is obtained. The duration of the procedure is no more than 15 minutes.
  • For 1 liter of water, take 1 tbsp. l. salt and 1 tbsp. l. vinegar. Dip the feet into the prepared product for 15 minutes. After the procedure, wipe your feet dry and treat them with celandine oil.

All of these baths are recommended to be carried out daily before bedtime for 10 days, without interruptions.

Lotions and compresses:

  • Salt and mint. Sodium chloride is mixed with the crushed plant in a 2: 1 ratio. The resulting mixture is applied abundantly on the foci of onychomycosis and the spaces between the toes. The compress is kept for at least 1 hour. The procedure is recommended to be carried out 2 times a day.
Compress with salt and mint
  • Salt and soda. Mix bicarbonate and sodium chloride in equal proportions, and apply the resulting composition to wet feet on 15 minutes, then rinse it off with running water and treat the nails with any antifungal pharmaceutical agent.
  • Salt, Aspirin and Retinol. Grind 2 tablets of acetylsalicylic acid into powder. Add 1 capsule of Retinol and a pinch of salt and baking soda. To make it easier to apply the product to the skin and nails, dilute it with 1 tsp. l. any vegetable oil and mix until creamy. The resulting composition is rubbed into the nail rollers, fixed with a bandage and left overnight. Repeat the treatment until the signs of the disease disappear completely.
  • Salt and garlic. A clove of garlic is crushed to a state of gruel, and added to a glass of hot water with 1 tbsp. l. sodium chloride. After the product has cooled down, strain it and add 4 tbsp. l. soda. Moisten the areas of the nails and skin affected by the fungal infection with the obtained saline solution 3 times a day. Additionally, it can be used to disinfect footwear.
Lotions with salt and garlic
  • Salt and laundry soap. To prepare a remedy, you will need 2 hours. l. grated soap (you can also use tar soap), 2 tsp. l. soda and sodium chloride. Mix the mass thoroughly and apply to the affected areas as an application for the whole night. Rinse your feet with running water in the morning.

Is it possible to recover in a week?

So quickly, no medication or alternative remedy, including salt, will help get rid of a fungal infection. If we are talking about the early stage of the disease, in 7 days it is possible to achieve the disappearance of its acute symptoms and some improving the appearance of nails with the help of baths and salty compresses, but for a full recovery it will take a little more time.

The effectiveness of salt at an advanced stage of the fungus

With an old chronic infection, salt should not be used as an independent remedy. It is impossible to cope with a deep lesion of the stratum corneum by external methods, especially folk ones. In such a situation, only a systemic approach in the form of antimycotics intended for oral administration can solve the problem.

This is due to the fact that the fungus lives not only in the thickness of the nail plate. If a person refuses to treat a disease for a long time for some reason, infectious agents are introduced into the body, spreading through the general bloodstream into its individual systems. As a result, local treatment of onychomycosis is useless, since external drugs cannot affect the pathogen from the inside.

Side effects and contraindications

Among the restrictions on the use of sodium chloride, only its individual intolerance can be distinguished. Fortunately, this is rare.

As for undesirable reactions, these include local effects in the form of increased itching, burning and hyperemia of the skin, associated with the development of allergies to the drug.

Use for children, pregnant women, lactating

Local use of sodium chloride is not contraindicated in children and women during gestation and breastfeeding. Restrictions may apply to auxiliary components used in recipes along with salt, for example, iodine solution. It is known that this substance has the ability to be actively absorbed into the body through the skin and, with an excess in the blood, have a negative effect on the functioning of the thyroid gland.

For children, expectant and nursing mothers, it is better to use recipes exclusively with the addition of salt without any additional ingredients.

Pros and cons of salt

There are positive and negative aspects to using sodium chloride. Let's take a closer look at them in the following table.

Advantages disadvantages
  • Ease of use, including at home.
  • Low cost and availability of auxiliary components.
  • Strengthens the effect of medications.
  • Insufficient antimycotic effect as an independent product in comparison with medicinal fungicidal agents.
  • Lack of therapeutic action in advanced stages of onychomycosis.

Recommendations for use

We list the main points that are important to consider when treating onychomycosis with salt:

  • Sodium chloride recipes can only have an additional status in the fight against fungal infections. Their appointment is justified against the background of the main treatment with local fungicidal and fungistatic drugs.
  • If we are talking about an advanced form of the disease, complex therapy with the use of systemic antimycotics is necessary. Recipes with salt in this case, used as an independent tool, will be practically useless.
  • Sodium chloride and any components that make up the trays and lotions are prohibited if the patient has individual hypersensitivity to them.
  • To consolidate the result obtained, the procedures must be repeated at least 10 times. You can not interrupt the course of treatment if the first signs of improvement have been outlined.
  • Fungal infections have the ability to recur frequently. After the main therapeutic effect has been carried out, salt is recommended to be used as a prophylactic agent in the form of the recipes listed in this article.

Reviews

Alena, 27 years old. “I remember when I was little, my father cured the fungus by applying grease to the foci of infection, and on top of table salt and applied a bandage. I left the bandage on all night. This method was advised to him by his acquaintances, and in our family it is still used ”.

Mikhail, 37 years old. “To combat onychomycosis, the doctor prescribed an antifungal cream Clotrimazole and advised to make baths with sea salt and iodine before applying it. I can say that this treatment option is very effective. I got rid of the fungus in just a month. "

Anna, 29 years old. “I struggled with onychomycosis for a long time. It seemed that the symptoms of the disease went away quickly, and the new nails did not want to grow back. I was afraid that the infection would return before I had time to get my first manicure. The pharmacy advised using magnesia or Epsom salts. I rubbed it gently into my nail plates after a hot shower every night before bed. Old dead tissue began to flake off faster, and new growth soon became noticeable. I advise everyone".

It is important to remember that salt, no matter what it is sea or table, can not be a panacea in the fight against fungal infection. Onychomycosis is a disease that requires a medical approach, therefore sodium chloride can only be considered as an adjuvant to increase the therapeutic effect.
