The most commonly diagnosed fungus is on the big toe. The sooner treatment is started, the lower the likelihood that the infection will spread to other nails and cause serious complications. We will talk about the specifics of this disease and the fight against it in today's article.

Fungus on the big toe

Stages of onychomycosis (symptoms)

Nail fungus is a pathology that is increasingly common in recent years. Infection can occur with various pathogens of mycosis - dermatophytes, yeast or moldy pathogens. Onychomycosis is dangerous because the pathological process is able to move not only to nearby healthy nail plates and skin of the feet, but also on adjacent tissues, for example, the groin area, armpits and NS.

As practice shows, many people miss the initial signs of a fungal nail infection by noticing the problem is only after the plates begin to change their structure and color towards yellow and even black. Consider in the following table all stages of this disease.

The degree of onychomycosis Description
INITIAL The nail grows dull, loses its shine. White spots or stripes appear on its surface. In general, it is difficult to say that the plates are affected by fungus, since they look relatively healthy and many people miss this stage. Right now, the disease is easiest to cure.
MEDIUM (INTENSIVE, PROGRESSIVE) The structure of the nail undergoes changes. It begins to thicken, crumble, break, the tissues exfoliate and turn yellow. In addition to the visible deformation, there is a feeling that the nails are beginning to smell bad.
STARTED (DYSTROPHY STAGE) There are no signs of health left on the plate - all of it is affected by the fungus and begins to flake off from the bed. These symptoms are joined by nerve pulsation and pain when pressed or physical pressure, which is associated with deep tissue damage.
The manifestation of the fungus on the thumb

If only one thumbnail is affected, it is a mild infection. However, treatment should be started immediately.

Causes of the fungus on the thumb

The main cause of onychomycosis is non-compliance with hygiene rules. Communication with a person who is sick with this disease is of great importance. For example, without observing preventive recommendations, the whole environment of the infected person becomes infected with a fungus.

The structure of the nail plate of the thumb is more likely to predispose to the development of onychomycosis. The growth and reproduction of mycelium colonies is easier in it. The huge accumulation of nerve endings and blood vessels in comparison with other fingers leads to the fact that discomfort appears faster in this area.

A nail fungus on the thumb can develop against the background of the following adverse factors:

  • endocrine problems;
  • psoriasis;
  • varicose veins;
  • eczema;
  • decreased immunity;
  • dermatitis;
  • serious infections - HIV, hepatitis, etc.;
  • wearing low-quality shoes.

In childhood, onychomycosis of the thumb is rare. While in the elderly, this pathology is diagnosed quite often. This is due to reduced body defenses and age-related changes.

When is it worth contacting a specialist?

Contacting a doctor - dermatologist or mycologist at the clinic should be timely. The sooner the problem is identified and the treatment is carried out, the fewer the consequences and complications will arise.

The initial symptoms of toenail fungus can be resolved in 1–2 months. If the pathological process has passed into an advanced stage, it will take at least six months to fight it.

Diagnostics

If symptoms resembling a fungus appear on the big toe or foot, you need to visit a dermatologist and start solving the problem. Don't do it yourself. The exact type of causative agent of onychomycosis can be determined using a specific diagnosis, which is described in detail in the table.

Research methods Description
MICROSCOPY To make a diagnosis, a laboratory assistant takes a scraping of the nail plate and examines it with a microscope. After determining the fungus, antimycotic agents of a wide spectrum of action are selected for the patient, since it is impossible to reliably find out the type of causative agent of the disease in this way.
DNA DIAGNOSTICS It is also based on the collection of scrapings from the nail, but attention is paid to the DNA cells of the mycelium. Helps to accurately identify the strain of the microorganism.
CULTURAL STUDY The collected scrapings are placed in a nutrient medium and observe the growth of fungal pathogens. By color and other parameters, the laboratory assistant determines not only the type of mycelium, but also selects the right drugs in relation to the detected microorganism.

It is possible to determine the type of infection only on the basis of a diagnostic study. Starting therapy without it is wrong and ineffective.

Treatment at the initial and advanced stages

Preventing the transmission of infection to loved ones is the best incentive to get rid of the thumb nail fungus as soon as possible. The healing process usually lasts months, and includes daily hygienic care for the damaged plate.

The course of therapy is selected by the doctor depending on the stage of the disease and the individual characteristics of the person. The initial form of pathology is usually limited to the appointment of local antimycotics, while the neglected form is a combination of systemic and external medications.

Healing varnish

A special tool that attracts with cost and ease of use, used for onychomycosis. These drugs are dispensed from pharmacies without a doctor's prescription. Their appointment is relevant at an early stage of onychomycosis. The principle of operation of the medicinal varnish is to soften the nail tissue and antimicrobial effect. Due to its liquid structure, the agent easily penetrates into the deepest layers of the plate, killing the fungus at the cellular level.

Worthy representatives of this group of drugs are:

  • Lotseril. Destroys more than a dozen known pathogens of onychomycosis. The active ingredient, amorolfine, kills mycelium spores, destroying their membranes. The varnish is applied to the lesions twice a day on pre-cleaned and fat-free nail plates. The treatment continues until their tissues are completely renewed.
  • Batrafen. Penetrates deep into the toenail, killing various types of fungi, including yeasts, molds and dermatophytes. The drug is based on ciclopirox and is used for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes according to the scheme 2 times a week. The therapy is continued until the signs of onychomycosis disappear.
  • Demicten. Effective at the initial stage of the disease. The active ingredient is formic acid. The drug is recommended to be applied not only to the affected areas of the nail, but also to the skin of the limb according to the instructions. Thus, the varnish helps to get rid of not only nail fungus, but also mycosis of the feet. The drug quickly eliminates the infectious process, fights the symptoms of itching and burning. Demicten is applied to clean and dry nails.

Local antimycotics: creams, ointments and sprays

External preparations should be applied not only to the zone of fungal infection of the plates, but also to the areas of the skin adjacent to them to enhance the therapeutic effect. Such funds extremely rarely provoke the development of undesirable systemic reactions on the part of the body, since they are practically not absorbed into the general bloodstream, therefore they are considered to be quite effective in the fight against the disease. But if the infection is started, and their use may be unjustified. Therefore, the selection of any medicinal antimycotics - local or for oral administration, should be dealt with by a dermatologist.

Before using external antifungal medicines, it is important to prepare the nail plates for therapeutic effects. To do this, they are softened with the help of foot baths, and then carefully filed and cut along the edge with nail scissors. Most drugs are recommended to be applied up to twice a day for several months. To avoid the return of the nail fungus, the use of the medication is continued for 2 weeks after the diagnosed recovery.

The list of popular local antimycotics includes:

  • Creolin. The drug successfully fights against onychomycosis of the big toe due to its active ingredients: ichthyol and caustic alkali. The drug penetrates deep into the tissue of the nail, destroying the spores of the mycelium. There is an opinion that this remedy is able to remove the last stage of the disease, that is, an advanced fungus. Creolin is applied carefully, avoiding overdose, as the drug is toxic. Treatment procedures are repeated every day for 4-12 weeks until a healthy nail folds grow back.
Creolin, Terbinafine
  • Terbinafine (Lamisil). The ointment is based on the active substance of the same name with pronounced fungicidal and fungistatic activity. The drug is used from 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on how the clinical picture of the pathology looks like. The agent treats the foci of onychomycosis on the thumb once a day. Terbinafine is also available in the form of a spray, which is convenient to use for disinfecting the patient's shoes.
  • Iodinol. The drug actively softens the affected nails, contributing to their painless removal. It is used for highly coarse tissue of the plate, the stratum corneum of which interferes with the normal penetration of medicinal components. Iodinol is applied to the affected nails, covered with cling film on top and fixed with a bandage overnight.

Medicinal antimycotics for oral administration

If we are talking about an old fungal infection, it is almost impossible to cure it only with the help of local preparations. The fact is that infectious agents in this case are not present only in the tissues of the nail plate, they choose a different path, affecting the internal organs of a person as a result of penetration into the general blood flow. This situation negatively affects immunity, provoking the development and exacerbation of somatic diseases, etc. Therefore, neglected onychomycosis cannot be ignored.

The specialist selects a comprehensive treatment of the nail fungus in the form of a scheme of oral and external antimycotics. Means for internal use are available in the form of tablets or capsules. Entering the body through the digestive tract, they are absorbed into the systemic circulation and destroy mycelium spores in its tissues, including in the area of the thumb.

Most often, preference is given to the following drugs:

  • Flucostat. The active substance is fluconazole. One capsule is prescribed once a week for 2-6 months. If necessary, the specialist prolongs the therapy.
Flucostat, Mycozoral
  • Mycozoral. The active ingredient is ketoconazole. It is prescribed for a tablet per day. If there are no visible signs of improvement in the situation, the dosage of the medication is doubled. The average duration of treatment is 6 months.
  • Terbinafine. Affordable drug based on the active substance of the same name. It is prescribed on a pill per day for up to six months, when it comes to onychomycosis of the thumb. In the case of fungal infection of other fingers, for example, the index or little finger, recovery is observed faster - after 2 months.

Nail removers

Sometimes it is possible to cope with the disease that has arisen if the affected nail plate is removed. A few treatments are usually sufficient to completely remove your thumbnail. Special preparations can cope with this task - ointments and plasters with a keratolytic effect:

  • Mycospore. The drug is applied to the nail plate once a day, leaving it for the whole night. In the morning, the softened tissue is cut off, and the procedure is repeated again at bedtime. Manipulation is practiced until the plate is completely removed.
Mycospore, Onychoplast
  • Onychoplast. Available as a patch. The tool is glued to the nail affected by the fungus at night. In the morning, fragments of waste tissue are removed using a special scraper in the set and a nail file.

Treatment with folk remedies

Among the recipes for alternative medicine in the fight against nail fungus, the following drugs have been used:

  • Iodine. To remove the causative agents of onychomycosis from the thumb, foot baths are used with the addition of 8 drops of the drug per 3 liters of water. The steamed plate is cut off along the edge with scissors and the upper stratum corneum is removed with a nail file, and then treated with hydrogen peroxide and any antifungal ointment is applied. The measures are repeated every day until the symptoms of the disease disappear.
  • Vinegar. Soak your feet in hot water with 9% table vinegar or apple cider vinegar for 15 minutes. The bath softens the nails, therefore, after the procedure, it is necessary to remove the exfoliating tissue with the help of manicure accessories. At an early stage of the disease, this manipulation is carried out daily as an independent method of treatment in within 2 weeks, when the fungus is started, the vinegar bath automatically becomes a component of the system therapy.
  • Lemon. A fresh slice of citrus is applied to the thumbnail infected with the fungus and fixed with a bandage. The compress is made for the whole night. The product acts like vinegar, so after awakening, the nails are cleaned of exfoliating fragments.
Lemon, celandine juice
  • Celandine. Freshly squeezed juice of the plant is applied to the surface of the foci of onychomycosis and the skin adjacent to them. The treatment is repeated every 2 hours, provided that the medicinal plant is well tolerated for 14 days.
  • Potato. Boil the peelings of the vegetable in unsalted water and steam the feet affected by the fungus in the prepared liquid. Then apply potato cake gruel in the form of a mask on sore nails for 20 minutes. Wash off with water and treat the nail plates with pork fat. The procedure is practiced daily.
  • Coffee. The natural product is brewed and cooled to 45 ° C. The feet are immersed in hot liquid for 15 minutes. After the coffee bath, the feet are rinsed with running water and treated with any antifungal cream. The course of treatment is 10 days.
Coffee, garlic
  • Garlic. A few cloves of a vegetable are chopped on a grater and the resulting gruel is mixed with 1 tbsp. l. medical alcohol. The agent is applied to the foci of onychomycosis every day in the form of a compress for 25 minutes.
  • Tea mushroom. A piece of the product is cleaned of excess films and dirt, crushed to a state of gruel and gently rubbed into the stratum corneum of the nail plate. The rest of the mass is applied to the tissue in the form of a compress for 20 minutes. The procedure is repeated daily.
  • Soda. On the basis of sodium bicarbonate, softening foot baths and a paste with a keratolytic effect are made. For its preparation 2 tbsp. l. soda is mixed with a small amount of water to a slurry state. The resulting mixture is applied to the affected nails, covering the top with plastic wrap and a bandage. It is advisable to leave the compress overnight. In the morning, the softened tissue is cut, in the evening, the manipulation is repeated again.
Soda, whiteness
  • White. And this household chemical has found application in folk medicine. It is applied with a cotton swab in undiluted form on pre-steamed and cleaned nails and left until completely absorbed for 20 minutes. Whiteness is not washed off until morning. After waking up, the feet are cleaned with plenty of running water.

Features of the course and treatment in children

Onychomycosis in a child does not differ in clinical manifestations from the disease of an adult. Symptoms of pathology have the same onset and subsequent character, which is not reflected in its principles of diagnosis. Most often, toenail fungus occurs in children over 10 years of age.

Treatment of onychomycosis in young patients has its own characteristics. Up to the age of three, preference is given to external therapy with the use of antimycotics, allowed from the first months of life. These include Clotrimazole, Isoconazole, and Econazole. At 3 years old, if necessary, the doctor can prescribe oral preparations based on terbinafine hydrochloride, which have a minimum of adverse reactions for the child's body. From the age of 12, medicines containing itraconazole are allowed.

Children are prohibited from iodine preparations, since their use harms the functional activity of the thyroid gland. Antifungal varnishes based on ciclopirox and amorolfine are not recommended until the age of 12.

Features of the course and treatment in pregnant women, lactating

Fungus of the thumbnails in a woman while carrying a baby and breastfeeding also does not have specific differences from the pathologies encountered in ordinary life. Doctors believe that the disease is not dangerous for the unborn child, since mycelium spores cannot overcome the placental barrier, but there are still complications. These include the following points:

  • Exacerbation of chronic pathologies against the background of a sharp decrease in immune defense.
  • Allergic reactions caused by the production of excess antibodies by the weakened fungus of the body.
  • Spread of infection from the nail plate of the thumb to healthy areas of the body.

The latter factor means that the baby, during or after childbirth, has a high chance of picking up mycelium spores from the mother. Therefore, you should not ignore the appearance of onychomycosis, even on one toe. Treatment must be carried out without fail.

Fungus on the thumb during pregnancy

Initially, the doctor diagnoses, and then selects the appropriate medications. Systemic antimycotics - tablets and capsules for oral administration to expectant and lactating mothers are prohibited, because they enter the general circulation and can have a negative effect on the developing fetus or newborn. You can not treat nail fungus and laser. During pregnancy and lactation, only local therapy and surgery are indicated.

If the disease is in advanced form, in order to protect the baby from the effects of infection, the woman should be removed a nail on an outpatient basis with the imposition of a special prosthesis, which relieves discomfort during the regrowth of a new one plates. It is undesirable to use local medicines such as creams and ointments without a prescription from your doctor. What drug to use and how long is the specialist decides on an individual basis.

As for traditional medicine recipes, using them at home is rarely effective. On the contrary, you can aggravate the pathological process and harm the woman. For example, foot baths are not recommended for expectant mothers due to high temperatures, as hot water causes a rush of blood to the pelvic organs and can cause premature onset of labor activities. The only thing that can be advised for pregnant and lactating women is treating the nail with tea tree oil or propolis to slow the growth of infection.

Features of the course and treatment in the elderly

According to statistics, in elderly people, onychomycosis of the thumb occurs several times more often than in other patients. Men are more susceptible to infections.

Pathology develops due to the following reasons, characteristic of elderly people:

  • Slow metabolism, which affects the absorption of nutrients by the body. A deficiency of chemical elements negatively affects the growth and appearance of the nail, against which the fungus has a greater chance of colonization.
  • Violation of blood circulation. With age, this problem occurs more and more often, and its initial signs are noted in small vessels - the capillary network in the fingertips. Deterioration of the blood circulation process leads to a lack of oxygen and nutrients in the tissues the nail bed, which causes disruption in the growth of the plates and prevents the body from fully fighting infection.
  • Late diagnosis. Elderly people think less about how they look, which is why they start onychomycosis. Usually they come to a specialist at a stage when the fungus has already started and the finger begins to hurt.
  • Failure to comply with hygiene rules. Many of the elderly suffer from various diseases, more often there are several of them. Therefore, self-care is difficult due to these factors. Not fulfilling daily hygiene requirements, a person himself triggers the infection.
Personal hygiene and nail fungus in the elderly

The selection of medicines for the elderly is limited. It is affected by the presence of chronic pathologies, in particular, problems with the cardiovascular system and liver disease. In addition, local therapy is often ineffective due to the too hard and dense stratum corneum of the nail associated with age-related changes. In this case, before starting treatment, it is recommended to soften the plates with appropriate preparations with keratolytic action, for example, based on urea and remove the surface affected layer, and only then proceed with the use of antifungal funds.

Treatment tactics for an ingrown nail

Sometimes the plate, under the influence of certain factors, grows into the skin of the nail, its lateral part. This problem initially does not bother a person too much, but after some time the existing inconvenience changes the pain and signs of the inflammatory process in the form of swelling and tissue hyperemia.

Most often, ingrown nail occurs on the thumb (pictured). To prevent this condition, it is necessary to exclude possible causes of its development, one of which is a fungal infection, for example, candidiasis.

If the first prerequisites arose that the nail could grow in, you should immediately consult a doctor. The earlier the specific treatment is carried out, the faster the recovery will come and the more painless the recovery stage will pass. In advanced cases, surgical removal of part of the ingrown plate is practiced.

So, what are the treatment tactics for this pathology?

Surgery. The nail is dissected at the site of ingrowth, removing the infected tissue along with the roller. In complicated cases, the plate is removed in full using local anesthesia.

Surgical intervention

After surgery, sutures are mandatory and dressings are made daily for the next 4 weeks. After 6 months, the plate changes completely. Sometimes, after the operation, the nail is deformed again, and the ingrowth situation is repeated.

Laser treatment. The most gentle method that 100% copes with the problem of an ingrown nail plate and prevents the recurrence of pathology in the future. The laser therapy procedure is performed under local anesthesia with selective removal of the ingrown nail tissue.

Application of staples. This method is not based on surgical intervention, but on a less traumatic way of dealing with the problem of an ingrown nail - correction with specially selected staples. Let's consider them in more detail:

  • Fraser Brace. It is a wire loop, which is made according to the individual measurements of the patient and is applied to the plate, without requiring its mechanical correction (filing, cutting). It works on the principle of contraction, raises the corners of the nail, preventing their ingrowth. Symptoms of relief of the condition occur already on the fourth day of wearing it. Gradually, the plate takes on a normal shape and stops growing.
Fraser Brace
  • Bracket ZTO. It is a wire brace that is placed and fixed along the edges of the nail roll according to the Fraser principle. The remedy is made and installed by the doctor according to the individual characteristics of the patient. Gradually lifts the edges of the nail and straightens them, guaranteeing the expected therapeutic effect.

Ointments and gels for ingrowth. They work successfully only at the initial stages of the pathological process. Their task is to soften the tissues of the growing nail, destroy pathogens and correct the growth of the plate in the right direction. We list these drugs:

  • Nogtinorm. Ointment based on palm oil, licorice and other medicinal components. Effectively softens the nail, fights inflammation and normalizes its growth.
  • Dr. Scholl's. Gel based on components that qualitatively soften the plate and remove signs of infection. Allowed from 12 years old.
  • Dimexide. An agent used to relieve inflammation in an ingrown toenail. It is used in the form of compresses and rinses. Has a large list of contraindications.

Folk remedies. Another way to deal with the problem of an ingrown toenail at an early stage. Basically, the following types of baths are used:

  • Saline. Help relieve pain and inflammation. For 1 liter of water, you need to take 2 tbsp. l. sea or table salt.
  • Soda. Sodium bicarbonate has a decongestant and softening effect, helping to remove the hardened layer of nail cells. To prepare a bath 1.5 tbsp. l. soda is added to 1 liter of hot water, the procedure lasts for 20 minutes. After it, the edges of the nail plate are gently lifted with a toothpick and a cotton flagellum is placed under them, thereby trying to correct the incorrect growth of the nail.
Healing baths

Whichever method of treatment is chosen for this condition, it is important to first consult with a doctor, even if the pathology is supposed to be eliminated at home. A specialist examination will never be useless, because in the absence of proper help, ingrown nail can be aggravated by a variety of complications.

When is surgical intervention necessary?

Surgical removal of the nail plate may be necessary with advanced onychomycosis and ineffectiveness of therapy with local and systemic antimycotics. Some patients prefer the surgical approach because of the length and cost of conservative treatment.

Surgical removal of the thumb or toenail guarantees a complete recovery from onychomycosis and has no side effects, unlike the use of drugs.

How is the surgery performed? The finger is treated with an antiseptic, a tourniquet is applied below the plate to stop bleeding, and anesthesia is given with Lidocaine. The doctor uses scissors or special nippers to remove the plate and protect the exposed bed from dead infected tissue. After the procedure, he treats the surgical field with iodine and applies a compress with an antiseptic substance.

The nail plate, first of all, performs protective functions - it protects tissues from the adverse effects of the environment. For this reason, its removal can lead to the addition of infection and the development of an inflammatory process in the finger. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to follow hygienic recommendations that minimize the likelihood of complications, including recurrence of a fungal infection.

So, what you need to do to restore the thumbnail on the right or left hand after the removal:

  • Do not wet the wound for the first week. If necessary, put on gloves made of waterproof material.
  • Dressings with antiseptic agents daily.
  • Avoid possible injury or injury to the finger.
  • Do not engage in "dirty" work, for example, to refuse contact with soil, etc.
Failure of contact with soil

If the removal of the nail plate occurred on the leg, it is recommended to adhere to the following requirements for a quick recovery:

  • For 3 days, do not overload the finger with walking and other physical efforts.
  • Do not wet the bandage for one week.
  • Refuse to wear tight uncomfortable shoes, disinfect all shoes and socks with disinfecting antimycotics, if they have previously come into contact with the surface affected by the fungus.
  • Regularly bandage the finger with the obligatory treatment of the wound with an alcohol solution of iodine or other antiseptics.

Additionally, you can advise a visit to a dermatologist to minimize the likelihood of recurrence of the infection.

Self-medication errors

If the fungus appears on the toenail of the big toe, and the patient conducts treatment, but does not see a noticeable result, there are doubts about the inexpediency of the applied therapy. Usually, similar situations are observed in persons who are engaged in the selection of medicines independently without visiting a specialist.

Faced with the lack of the expected therapeutic effect, such people are blamed for the failures of the drug manufacturers, but in fact, the reason lies far not in a poor-quality product. Consider the main mistakes of patients who decide to cure nail fungus on their own:

  • Incorrect diagnosis of the degree of damage. If at the initial stage the disease is easily eliminated by nonspecific antiseptics (hydrogen peroxide, brilliant green, iodine, etc.) and medicinal varnishes, then with advanced onychomycosis, heavy artillery from systemic and local preparations is required impact. Due to inexperience, many people choose only external antimycotics, limiting themselves to an ointment or gel, therefore, it is not surprising that there is no result from such therapy if it is time to drink antifungal pills.
  • Illiterate selection of drugs. There are a large number of pathogens of onychomycosis, and broad-spectrum antimycotics have been created to combat them. But there are situations when the active substance of the drug is ineffective against specific microorganisms, in which case treatment with inappropriate medications is ineffective. Therefore, the use of one or another antimycotic must be compared with the type of fungal infection in order to speed up the healing process.
  • Irregularity of therapy. To get rid of onychomycosis of the thumb, treatment should be carried out according to a strictly selected scheme without interruptions in the use of medications. Systematic cleansing and removal of exfoliating fragments of the nail plate and their treatment with agents with a fungicidal and fungistatic effect deliberately prevents the progression of the pathological process, pathogens lose the ability to reproduce and grow in such conditions. A pass in the use of the drug slows down recovery and increases the resistance of mycelium spores to the action of antimycotics.
  • Failure to comply with hygiene rules. The fungus on the thumb is a danger not only for the close environment, but also for the patient himself, since infectious agents remain everywhere - on bed linen, clothes, etc. A rare change of hosiery and other factors contribute to constant self-infection and negatively affect the effectiveness of the therapy.

Complications

At an early stage, onychomycosis of the thumb is not dangerous and does not have a negative effect on the human body. The neglected form of pathology provokes the development of complications that, in the literal sense of the word, undermine human health. These include:

  • the spread of infectious agents to nearby healthy areas of the skin and nails;
  • deterioration of immune defense;
  • chronicity of the disease with damage to internal organs;
  • exacerbation of chronic and sluggish inflammatory processes;
  • aesthetic changes in the appearance of the nail plate up to their complete destruction.
Destruction of the nail plate

If you continue to be inactive and do not consult a doctor at a late stage of pathology, mycelium of fungi begin to multiply actively in the human body, and their waste products cause the following complications:

  • toxicoderma is an acute inflammatory process of an allergic nature, proceeding according to the type of severe dermatosis: a rash with it is localized not only in the focus of onychomycosis and on the skin of the body, but also on the mucous membranes shells;
  • Lyell's syndrome is a complicated form of toxicoderma, accompanied by the development of necrotic changes;
  • hepatopathy - acute damage to liver cells, characterized by skin rashes, colic in the right hypochondrium, general weakness, jaundice, vomiting mixed with blood and ascites - accumulation of fluid in the area peritoneum.

The consequences of thumb nail fungus without adequate treatment can lead to quite deplorable results - toxic damage is noted not only in the liver, but in the heart, kidneys and other vital organs. Lack of therapy in such situations is fatal in 95% of patients.

When can a nail turn black?

Such a phenomenon as a darkened spot under the nail plate is common. At least once in his life, every person has faced a similar situation, regardless of his observance of sanitary and hygienic standards and lifestyle.

The reasons for the blackening of the nail can be different - from a banal injury to a fungus (appears more often), but you do not need to make hasty conclusions and make a diagnosis yourself. Consider four reasons due to which darkening of the nail plate occurs:

  • predisposition to increased pigmentation;
  • a finger injury and a hematoma that has developed against this background;
  • liver disease;
  • onychomycosis.
Blackening of the nail with fungus

Hematomas tend to dissolve on their own within a short time. Hereditary pigmentation haunts a person from birth and it is also impossible to confuse it with a fungal infection, moreover, there is no effect on the structural structure of the nail. Liver diseases make themselves felt not only by signs of blackening of the nail plates, therefore, if the patient the nail has darkened and he is sure that recently the finger has not been injured, most likely, we are talking about onychomycosis.

The fungus affects both hands and feet. In this case, the plate can have not only black spots, but also completely paint in unhealthy shades of yellow, gray and even brown. Its structure under the influence of the infectious process begins to change - the nail is deformed, becomes thicker and seems to rise above its bed.

In addition to the nail, the tissues underneath also suffer from the infection. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a doctor as soon as possible and begin treatment.

Prophylaxis

There are two types of preventive measures - primary and secondary. Let's consider them in more detail.

Primary prevention is aimed at preventing nail fungus infection in healthy individuals. It includes the following guidelines:

  • compliance with the rules of personal hygiene;
  • rejection of someone else's shoes;
  • exclusion of walking with bare feet in public places;
  • use of personal kits for manicure and pedicure;
  • avoiding nail damage;
  • treatment of the plates with any antiseptic after an injury;
  • timely access to a doctor if you suspect a fungus infection.

Secondary prevention is aimed at preventing the recurrence of pathology. So, in order not to face onychomycosis again, you must adhere to the following recommendations:

  • strictly follow the doctor's prescription;
  • disinfect personal manicure tools;
  • dispose of hosiery in contact with body surfaces infected with the fungus;
  • disinfect shoes with special products.

Forecast

With the timely detection of onychomycosis and adequate therapy, the prognosis for recovery is favorable.

The duration of treatment for the fungus diagnosed on the big toe nail depends on the stage of the pathological process. Relapses of the disease occur in 40% of cases, and usually their occurrence is associated with unwillingness to see a doctor and self-medication. In persons suffering from concomitant chronic pathologies, the prognosis for recovery is markedly worsening.
